Brazil outclass Thailand

Thailand opened their FIBA Women's Under-19 World Championship campaign with a comprehensive 104-45 defeat to Brazil in the Group B fixture yesterday at the Thai-Japan Youth Welfare Centre.

Thailand, who are in the top-flight tournament for the first time by virtue of being the hosts, were handed a basketball lesson by the Brazilians.

The South America champions were better than the home girls, tactically and technically, by a mile. The Thais appeared relieved when the final whistle went off as it meant their torment had ended. "Our girls tried their best. But we were no match for them. We're inferior to them, physically and technically. We also have less experience of competing in the world-class tournament. We looked nervous," said Thai coach Thongchai Vatanasakdakul.
