Shareholdings case to be heard next week : EC

The case involving shares held by MPs that allegedly vio¬late the constitution - which could see 44 members of the Lower House disqualified - will be taken up by the Election Commission next week.

Election Commissioner Prapan Naikowit said yesterday the qualifications of the MPs had to be reviewed because the matter involved shares in firms with state concessions.

New election commissioner Wisut Phothitaen will join the review next week. Prapan said Wisut should be given time to read files on the case before the EC moves to resolve the matter.

Prapan denied reports some senators, accused of having shareholdings contrary to con¬stitutional limits, had tried to lobby the EC so it ruled in their favour.

An informed source said the EC had postponed the review because Election Commission chief Apichart Sukhagganond was in Germany and EC mem¬ber Sodsri Sattayatham had taken sick leave.
