Kasit welcomes EC's decision

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said he welcomed the announcement by the Election Commission that he was not found to be in breach of the Constitution because of his wife's shares in a firm linked to state concessions.

Thai Constitution prohibits MPs, senators, the prime minister and ministers- as well as spouse- from holding equity stakes in firms linked to state concessions.

Kasit said he had consulted relevant agencies from the very beginning of his political career to ensure transparency and was glad that the matter was over with."

Kasit was speaking to a group of reporters on the side of a two-day Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Egypt.

Kasit's wife Jintana holds shares in Bangkok Expressway Plc. But for the EC sees it's debenture bond, not the shares that hold administrative authority in the company, it discarded the complaint against him.

Separately, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Panich Vikitsreth, said he has received report about planned visits to Dubai starting next week by a group of Thai politicians to visit fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra. Panich said the ministry has expressed concern to the United Arab Emirates. He said the UAE government has informed him that they are considering asking Thaksin to acknowledged in writing the limited activities he is allowed while living in UAE.UAE has reportedly said it would allowed Thaksin to reside in the county only if he does not use the Gulf State country as a launching PAD to attack Thailand. It was not clear if Thaksin's meeting with the MPs, as well as his phone-in to his supporters at rallies, would be considered by the UAE as "political interference".
