Govt bonds sold out

Govt bonds sold out

The elderly queue up for the bond purchases.

The government's savings bonds worth Bt30 billion were fully subscribed within one hour after the subscription kicked off today, according to the Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij.

The elderly queued up at participating banks' branches nationwide early Monday. But many branches reported that the bonds were sold out within the first half hour, leaving many disappointed.

Eligible for the bonds are those aged over 60 years. Minimum subscription is Bt10,000 and maximum Bt1 million.

The original amount to be available from today until tomorrow was set at Bt15 billion before the ministry raised the amount to Bt30 billion, in response to the overwhelming demand of the elderly people. All were fully subscribed.

The government has launched the bond scheme worth Bt50 billion. The second lot of bonds worth Bt15 billion will be available for subscription during July 15-16 and the rest Bt5 billion on July 17 and during July 21-22.
