Chiang Rai governor leads from the front

"With great power comes great responsibility" is the famous tagline from the comic-based movie "Spider-Man".

Who could have a greater understanding of this maxim than our prime minister? Throughout the past week, Abhisit Vejjajiva was bombarded with questions about terrorism charges against the foreign minister, the rapid spread of type-A H1N1 influenza, and details of the economic stimulus package. Despite the barrage, however, the premier managed to attend several functions.

But Abhisit's responsibilities don't end with facing questions on these issues. The Public Health Ministry, which is preparing to kick off its anti-flu campaign on July 27, is to ask Abhisit and several other ministers to serve as presenters for its hygienic masks.

But the "Spider-Man" tagline doesn't just apply to our national leaders. It's just as pertinent for leaders at the local level, such as provincial governors.

Governors have the power to make key decisions within their jurisdictions - decisions that can (and often do) enrage or satisfy the locals. Chiang Rai Governor Sumet Saengni-mnuan would surely agree.

Last Friday, about 800 villagers from Chiang Rai's Wiang Chai and Wieng Chiang Rung districts gathered to pressure Sumet to oppose |the planned construction of a biomass power plant.

After the protesters stormed into City Hall, Sumet succumbed to the pressure. Later, he announced that he believed the biomass plant should not be constructed in the province. A number of villagers who supported the project were enraged by his comment, accusing him of caving in to the protesters.

And Sumet must now shoulder yet another responsibility.

On the very same day, Somkiat Chuenthi-rawong, chairman of Chiang Rai's tourism association, mentioned Sumet's name in connection with the province's efforts to restore its tourism industry. Certainly, it was reminiscent of the occasion earlier this month when Sumet had to get his feet dirty, ploughing rice fields using buffalo as part of the campaign against using machinery.

On this occasion, Sumet was praised for his cooperation with the province's tourism associations on efforts to boost the industry. A roadshow is planned in five regions nationwide to draw tourists back to the provinces. Called "Phuwa Pha Thiaw" (governor-guided tour), the campaign sees Sumet responsible for promote destinations in his province, as well as routes to destinations in Burma and Laos.

It's good to know that so many powerful people out there are showing their responsibility... like our hero, Spider-Man.
