The government of Fiji was asked by Thai authorities to temporarily detain fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra when he was in that country, a senior official said yesterday.
Sirisak Tiyapan, executive director of the Office of the Attorney-General's international affairs department, said the agency had communicated with Fiji's government through the Foreign Affairs Ministry last week.
Thailand has no extradition treaty with Fiji, and application of an extradition request depends on voluntary cooperation, Sirisak said.
He said that the communication from the Office of the Attorney-General included the court ruling last October against Thaksin and an arrest warrant for him with the official letter to the Fijian authorities.
Thaksin has since left Fiji.
