Shut all schools, Sudarat says

Shut all schools, Sudarat says

Sudarat Keyuraphan

The government should close all schools nationwide, as well as private tutorial colleges, games shops and Internet cafes - to disinfect these places and help stop students getting the new flu virus, former public health minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said yesterday.

"It is too late to temporarily shut down tutorial schools, game shops, and Internet cafes, as the disease has already spread across the country," Sudarat told a press conference.

"It would be better if the government closed public and private schools across the country and created a big cleaning week campaign to disinfect virus contamination in schools."

Any parents who got flulike symptoms and the virus from their children should stay at home without needing to seek sick leave from their workplace.

Sudarat said all public places such as department stores, cinemas, restaurants, and bus stops, should be cleaned with disinfectant and alcoholbased hand washing gel given to customers.

But she said the country should not be seal itself off, as this would affect the economy and society.

"As a person who had to handle with the outbreak of avian influenza and Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) I don't want to condemn the government or politicise this issue, over the failure to control the disease, because the virus has already spread across country. But I want to make constructive comments that will help the country curb the spread of this pandemic," she said.
