
The Commerce Ministry's Internal Trade Department today will meet with pig farmers and retailers about issuing a daily suggested retail price for pork, to protect consumers from unfair price rises.
The move was prompted by consumers complaining about retail pork prices of Bt125 to Bt130 a kilogram, instead of Bt110 like it should be.
TUF clinches award
Thai Union Frozen Products (TUF), a major producer and exporter of canned and frozen seafood products, recently announced it had won a William B Darden Distinguished Supplier Award for 2009 from Darden Restaurants in the US.
TUF was honoured for consistently providing the Red Lobster seafood-restaurant chain with high-quality shrimp while maintaining its focus on service, innovation, cost and sustainability.
This year, only 11 out of more than 1,500 global suppliers won the award, and only two of these winners were suppliers of seafood.
Gem tax-waiver call
The Board of Trade and the Thai Chamber of Commerce yesterday urged the government to waive the 1-per-cent value-added tax on imported raw
gemstones.
The proposal was aimed at promoting Thailand as a jewellery-production base and international trading centre.
Board vice chairman Komson Opassathavorn said the tax waiver would provide small enterprises with more financial liquidity, because production costs would be lower.
Thai exporters would also have a greater competitive advantage in the global market, he said.
Day Poets to air
Publisher Day Poets is diversifying into television programming with "The Idol", to air on Modernine TV.
