His committee's report is due out next week.
If Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva refused to implement moves the committee proposes to reconcile the country, it would be up to the public to decide what to do, Direk said.
"This is historic, as there has never been a reconciliation committee to solve political conflict. For the committee's work, I always stick to the motto that, 'There is no unity unless there is fairness'," said Direk, who is an elected senator for Nonthaburi.
He said confronting parties should stop quarrelling and wait to see how the people holding power react to the panel's proposals, which he felt would help bring the country unity. Violence would only perpetuate problems.
The committee's report would be handed to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva next Thursday, Direk said. Some 2,000 copies of the report are being printed and will be distributed to senators and people around the country.
