
According to a statement issued on behalf of three sugar millers associations, during the period, a number of 7.89 million bags were sold or 789 million kg, which dropped by 450,000 bags or 45 million kg on year. The sale volume represented the lowest figure in five years.
As of June 29, outstanding reserves stood at 113.6 million kg.
"We don't think that there would be sugar shortage in Thailand. Rather, it is likely that the market coudl be oversupplied," said Prakit Pradipasen, chairman of the coordinating committee for the three associations.
"Statistics showed that domestic sugar consumption is the lowest in five years. Reserves for domestic consumption should be consequently cut so that more sugar could be exported and generate export income for the country," he said.
