Bt8m limit on airport closure compensation

Companies and government agencies that suffered losses from the airport closures last year will be paid only Bt8 million and have been told that if they want more, to sue the people who caused the damage, a Transport Ministry source said yesterday.

The ministry had asked the government for Bt680 million to repay agencies that had spent funds in assisting tourists stranded by the seizures of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports by the People's Alliance for Democracy, the source said.

And Bt19 billion was requested to compensate government and private organisations for lost income and rehabilitation costs.

However, the Bureau of the Budget has claimed that according to the conditions of the Bt1.9 billion budget approved by the Cabinet on December 9, only Bt8 million would be paid out as requested.

Government bodies must be responsible for the rest of money they spent for the cause, the bureau was quoted by the source as saying.

The bureau also said the assistance for stranded tourists by Thai Airways International, other Thai airlines as well as Airports of Thailand was part of the service the companies must provide on their own, the source said.

The issue would be brought to the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.
