Thai jumbo gives birth in Aust

A Thai female elephant gave birth to a male baby elephant at a Sydney zoo in Australia on early Saturday as the first Asian elephant born in Australia.

Taronga Zoo and Royal Thai ConsulateGeneral in Sydney will be organising a contest to name the newborn elephant given birth by Phang Thongdee.

ConsulGeneral to Sydney Kiattikhun Chartprasert said two activities would be held to celebrate the elephant's birth, including the naming contest and meritmaking.

"The contest winner will be rewarded round ticket SydneyBangkokChiang Mai, travel package for visiting Chiang Mai and Bangkok and home stay package at Lampang province's Thai Elephant Conservation Centre to experience mahout training," said Kiattikhun.

Tomorrow (July 6) Kiattikhun will meet the zoo's director to congratulate on the birth of the baby elephant and consult about the possibility to organise Thai Festival at the zoo, which is expected to be held in August.

While, on Wednesday (July 8) Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya will visit the newborn elephant and other Thai elephants at the zoo during his visit to Sydney to meet with business people there who are interested in trading and running business in Thailand in a bid to boost their confidence in Thailand's economy.
