Interest in Don Mueang

Two European investors are eyeing aircraft-maintenance operations at Don Mueang Airport, with each planning to commit Bt1 billion, the Civil Aviation Department says.

Deputy director-general Vuttichai Singhamanee yesterday identified the two firms as EADS, which includes Airbus Industrie, and Europe Aviation.

"We expect Europe Aviation to make a decision this year and EADS in 2010," he said.

The two European firms are seeking tax incentives from the Board of Investment, whose regulations allow a foreign firm to own not more than 49 per cent of an aircraft-maintenance operation in Thailand.

EADS and Europe Aviation both want the BOI to waive the foreign-ownership limit, Vuttichai said, adding that a ministerial regulation to the effect would be sufficient.

"We're confident investing in an aircraft maintenance centre in Thailand would be successful, because Thailand is an aviation hub for Southeast Asia. Besides, most of the countries in this region have gone with Airbus," he added.
