TRANSFER OF TOP SECURITY CHIEF

No link to Thaksin

Lt Gen Surapon

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva denied yesterday that the transfer of the National Security Council's secretary- general Lt General Surapon Puenai-yaka was based on his links with ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Cabinet approved the transfer of Surapon to the PM's Office and replaced him with his deputy Thawin Piensri.

Abhisit said the Cabinet had made the decision based solely on management reasons in order to improve efficiency in security management.

"Since I assumed the premier's post six months ago, I have rarely transferred permanent officials. But this time I would like to make security management more efficient,'' he said.

The decision follows the agency's poor handling of the southern crisis.

Surapon was in class 10 and Thaksin's classmate in the Military Preparation School. He was appointed to the NSC post during the tenure of then-PM Samak Sundaravej.

A stressed-looking Surapon refused to answer reporters' questions after the Cabinet meeting.
