Beauties and beasts

This trendy dude was spotted on the catwalk during the Thailand Int’l Dog Show at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, yesterday.

Think of an Alaskan sled dog and what usually comes to mind is a fearsome creature, half wolf, half mutt and completely at home on the frozen tundra. So visitors and fellow competitors at the Thailand International Dog Show 2009 yelped with surprise when Sakulthai Tanatchang took to the floor of Impact Arena with his faithful Alaskan Malamute, "Marcus". While most Alaskan Malamute's weigh in at just over 30 kilograms, Marcus is a scalesbusting 50kg.

It was the first time Marcus and his master had entered the Kennel Club of Thailand's All Breed Championship show, aimed at strengthening the relationship between dogs and their owners.

Dog's best friend

"It's not about winning the competition, it's about me and my dog," said Sakulthai.

Still, Marcus impressed the judges and audience with his swift movements and obedience.

About five hundred dogs and owners will enter the competitions and special shows being held over the next three days. Those not competing can enter their dogs for activities such as racing and catching ball. Experts are also on hand to offer information on feeding, care and discipline of dogs.

"Intimate connection is the most important thing apart from feeding," says Sathidchoti Rungrudee, a veterinarian.

He also advised that owners only enter their dogs in competitions when the dogs are physically and mentally ready for it. The dog show runs till Sunday at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani.
