PM strikes back

The Democrat Party is striking back in an attempt to woo voters with concrete achievements after having been attacked and politically challenged by its ally - the Bhum Jai Thai Party.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday he had instructed ministers to inspect the progress and transparency of government projects that have been implemented under the so-called "Strong Thailand 2012" with the Bt1.4 trillion of initially-approved funds.

Under the plan, new infrastructure such as water resources, roads, schools, hospitals and tourist attractions will be built to stimulate local economy to boost the chance of economic recovery. “We need to check the transparency and progress in these projects. We are working on the schedule for each minister who will be given assignments to go to areas where concerned projects are being developed,’’ Abhisit said.

The Abhisit Cabinet is seeking Parliament approval to borrow 800 billion baht (to fund the second phase of a stimulus package of 1.4 trillion baht over the next three years).

The Bhum Jai Thai Party last week has come up with its new policies to woo voters hoping to score big election victory in the next general election. The party leaders last week heavily criticised the government of lacking strategy and achievements after reports of widening rifts with the core coalition Democrat Party.
