GOOD I PRAISE ... DOUBTFUL I RAISE

In these troubled times, people look to honest leadership

THE CABINET MEETINg last Wednesday considered the controversial proposal to lease 4,000 NGV buses. I anticipated the result with anxiety. It was a big relief to hear that, instead of approving this project, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) was assigned to study and recommend it to the Cabinet within 30 days - as to whether it would be better off for the BMTA to lease or to purchase outright the NVG bus fleet. I would like to praise Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, for his courage to bar the proposal which was believed to be a deal that some politicians pushed in order to garner a tip for their sweaty efforts.

I do believe that a lot of Thais feel exactly the same way as I do. I sense that this country still has some hope. There is still a PM who dares to get in the way of politicians who hold their own interests before the nation's. I do support the PM in battling with this issue to the last. In assigning the Office of the NESDB to study the project, there might be a chance for the politicians to push this issue back again. I still have reservations whether the now Office of the NESDB is firm and independent enough to find reasonable reasons (which are plenty) to counter this proposal. It is possible those reasons might turn to be supportive reasons which would make it more difficult to reject next time around.

I would like to get this message across to the PM and the secretary-general of the Office of the NESDB. Some time ago, Professor Sanya Dharmasakti judged the case of a senior military officer, a minister taking benefits from the national forestry. His justice remains in the remembrance of Thais and was engraved in judiciary legend forever. Professor Puey Ungphakorn adhered to moral values and opposed an attempt by a very influential person in the banknote printing corruption. He is well remembered and still legendary in the Bank of Thailand.

I would like to convey my empathy to the PM and NESDB secretary-general so that they would, in spite of everything, safeguard moral values. Should this obvious issue get the green light at last, though it was wholeheartedly and widely known that some politicians would get a high amount of commission, the public might get upset and lose trust in the politicians. In these turbulent times of economic downturn, public morale is most important and is much-needed to fight the ongoing problems. The government decision to scrap the project would definitely raise public morale.

Do not worry whether your decision might cost you the secretary-general's job. If you were submissive to politicians with ill-will, so much so that national interests are plundered, how could you look at your face in the mirror? Do not worry whatsoever if the coalition parties should withdraw support and the government collapses. If you hang on to principles and national interest as you have already done, your popularity and that of the Democrat Party will increase overwhelmingly without doubt. Professor Puey once said: "If one is not overly concerned about keeping one's job, one can always make the right decision".
