Quoting eyewitnesses, police said the unidentified woman, in her 20s, walked near a balcony on the third flood of the Esplanade on Ratchadamphisek Road, looking anxious and distressed. She walked about five times in circles before climbing over the handrail and jumping.
She did not land on any shoppers on the floor below but died almost instantly. She wore a blackandwhite shirt, a pair of jeans and carried a brandname bag. Police are in the process of identifying her.
When Huay Khwang police arrived at the scene, they complained that the security guards moved the woman's body to a remote area.
The guards said later that they had contacted the police station chief and asked for his permission to move the body away from the scene, which is an area frequented by shoppers.
