Thailand confirms 9th H1N1 flu case

Paichit Varachit, deputy permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry

A 29yearold businessman who returned from the United States has been confirmed as Thailand's ninth H1N1 influenza case.

Paichit Varachit, deputy permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry, said yesterday that the man had no fever but still had a runny nose. The victim received the antiviral oseltamivir drug and was admitted to hospital.

Six other persons who had close contact with the man are fine and show no signs of flu.

Last week the first transmission of influenza A (H1N1) within the country was reported when a 19yearold man whose mother returned from the US on May 25 contracted the disease from her.

More university students have returned home from short courses overseas as the new semester is about to begin, he said.

Universities should follow the ministry's guidelines to allow those students to stay home for three days to observe their own condition before returning to study, he said.

The World Health Organisation said 69 countries have reported nearly 22,000 influenza 2009 cases, at least 126 of them fatal.
