Intel has agreed to buy software maker Wind River Systems for US$ 884 million

The move is in a bid by the US semiconductor giant to get its chips into more devices.

Intel, in a statement, said its takeover of Wind River is part of its strategy to grow beyond its traditional personal computer and server markets and into mobile handheld devices and other systems.

Intel said the transaction is expected to close later this year subject to regulatory approval.
