With about 4,000 people now in need of cornea implants but only 400 eye donors each year, some patients are waiting more than four years for operations, a senior official said yesterday.
But help is on its way: the Thai Red Cross Public Health Ministry has joined forces with the National Health Security Office, the Social Security Office and related agencies for a project to restore the eyesight of 8,200 patients free-of-charge between now and 2013. So far, 16,173 people have signed up to donate their eyes in the event of death, out of the targeted of 50,000 donors per year, said Red Cross Eye Bank director Lalida Pariyakanok.
