Don't make convenience an inconvenience truth

Life has become even more convenient thanks to the creation of power bars - a delicacy previously consumed by astronauts while flying in space.

Maybe one day very soon, we will be able to sustain ourselves with the consumption of a pill that contains all of the nutrition and calories we need. Perhaps we'll get to wear clothes that don't need washing or ironing.

All of this convenience is great, but what would be even better is living lives that created little or no waste.

Waste is what people today should bear in mind when deciding to purchase or do anything - a move that is coming more and more in focus, especially since people will celebrate World Environment Day on June 5.

Yes, Al Gore, the 45th vice president of the United States, made his name as the person against anything that could cause global warming. Sadly, shortly after his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" left the cinemas, the awareness and the furore died down.

However, those who are still concerned about global warming - which is believed to be the main cause of natural disasters worldwide - should visit www.unep.org/wed/2009 for tips on helping mitigate negative impacts on the environment.

This year's theme for World Environment Day is "Your Planet Needs You! Unite to Combat Climate Change", and believe me, there are simple things you can add to your daily routine that will help save our Planet Earth.

Many forget that water can be saved simply by not letting the tap run while shaving, washing or brushing your teeth. Using an electric razor or one with replaceable blades instead of disposable razors goes a long way towards cutting down on waste.

Use a handkerchief the next time you sneeze instead of tissue paper. And when packing your lunch, opt for reusable containers instead of wrapping your sandwiches in aluminium foil or plastic wrap.

As you leave the house, don't forget to switch off all the lights and appliances and remember to unplug chargers, as they continue to consume electricity even when they are not charging.

These are simple, easy things that each and every one of us should adopt. Besides, we need to do what we can to stop making Mother Nature angry - otherwise, there will come a time when a simple salad would be a gift from heaven, and all of our meals will come in the form of pills or power bars.
