Asean to decide next move after Aung San Suu Kyi's trial

Asean will wait for ruling of Burma's trial against Aung San Suu Kyi before deciding on the next move, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday.

Opposition leader Suu Kyi stands on trial on charges of illegally harboring an American man who swam across a lake to enter her residence uninvited.

The charges were widely considered a pretext to keep her detained ahead of elections the military goverment has planned for next year.

"We will wait for the outcome of the trial before making the next move," Abhisit said.

Meanwhile Thai Foreign Ministry issued a statement to clarify Asean chairman's statement on Burma's trial against Suu Kyi, saying the statement reflected the best intentions and desire for Burma's national reconciliation process.

Burma on Monday accused Thailand, which is rotating chairman of Asean grouping, of interfering in Burma's internal affairs by issuing the statement.

Asean's statement had expressed "grave concern" over the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi and said Burma's "honour and the credibility" were at stake.

Burma's military junta said the statement is not in conformity with Asean practice, incorrect in facts, interfering in the internal affairs of Myanmar  is strongly rejected by Myanmar," it said.

The statement "sadly noted" that Thailand had "failed to preserve the dignity of Asean, the dignity of Myanmar and the dignity of Thailand."

In the statement, Thai Foreign Ministry said the statement on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was issued with the best of intentions towards Myanmar (Burma) and reflects the desire for the process of national reconciliation in Myanmar to move forward on the basis of inclusiveness, with the participation of all sectors of society. Thailand, in its capacity as the current Asean Chairman, shall continue to pursue constructive dialogue with the Government of the Union of Myanmar, the statement said..

The statement is according to Asean practice as it was prepared and approved by the grouping's foreign ministers and heads of state.

Thailand released the statement as it was this year's Asean chairman.
