Ports' business drops on downturn

Bangkok Port suffered from a 8 per cent contraction in shipping services while Laem Chabang Port suffers from 12 per cent drop during October and March.

Acting Port Authority of Thailand Governor Sunida Sakulrattana expected the demand would remain at the level in the next six months. Overall services should show a 10 per cent drop, as demand should pick up in line with new orders.

During October and March 2008, Bangkok Port accommodated 1.3 million containers and Laem Chabang 5.3 million.

The authority is finalising the package to help reduce the shipping cost. The working committee should finalise the plan for submission to the Transport Ministry within 3 months.
