Traffic cameras doubled

Number of red-light-runners almost halved in four months

Surveillance cameras will be installed at another 30 intersections in Bangkok, after the existing system had proved effective, a senior police officer said yesterday.

The 30 new cameras will support the existing 30 in tackling the problem of motorists running red lights, said Pol Maj-General Phanu Kerdlarp-phol.

The cameras snapped 120,000 violations in January, their first month of use, but that figure had dropped sharply to 70,000 by last month.

Taxi drivers top the violators' list in every one of the four months, the officer said, adding that tickets and photographic evidence were now being mailed to red-light-runners homes just one day after the crimes were recorded.

A total of 183,303 tickets have been sent out, and 51,221 Bt500 fines have so far been paid, either in person at police stations or through the post.
