Streetwise: Sturdy firms should help weaker brethren

When in crisis, all businesses look to the government for help.

Instead they should look to someone nearby. As not all are in bad shape, the strong ones should be ready to help, for the sake of all.

It has been reported from San Francisco that an online community has taken on the job of trying to match venture capitalists with start-up technology companies. TheFunded.com is opening an institute to train technology entrepreneurs how to build top-notch businesses. The community has recruited 25 successful chief executives to be mentors or teachers at an institute to open in Silicon Valley in the coming months.

"Starting a great company has become increasingly difficult over the 15 years that I have been an entrepreneur," said Adeo Ressi, who launched TheFunded in 2007 as an online forum where entrepreneurs learn ways to swim among financial sharks and not be devoured.

Ressi believes the institute will bring about "the next wave of quality hi-tech start-ups" and said the aim was to "simplify the process of launching a new company".

In Britain, British Airways also launched a multimillion-pound package of measures to help small and medium-sized British businesses beat the recession and regain their rightful level. The airline has teamed up with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and BritishAmerican Business (BAB) to offer 5,000 return flights worth up to £15 million (Bt780 million) to help UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) win new business abroad.

There has been similar talk in Thailand, but with little action.

Most big companies are too busy expanding their businesses, while small ones are reluctant to widen their doors out of fear that they could be devoured by the giants.

Yet things should change.

Yes, I dream of Thai Airways International or other airlines quoting a special fare, if not free tickets, for Thai businesses on their way to market products overseas.

It would also be nice if private bus operators were to transport travellers at a special price to promote domestic tourism.

The top 10 Thai companies could also unite to train small players on a particular topic. Yes, Thai Union Frozen Products may be of help when small food companies want tips on food-quality preservation. Siam Cement Group could also provide ideas on packaging, cashing in on the ideas behind their paper business. Hmm, a fuel discount from PTT for companies that showed they recognised corporate social responsibility?

It would be nice if all were helping each other. It's time to unite to get Thailand moving again.
