Malaysia's vehicle importer, Weststar Group, intends to aggressively market LDV vans internationally following a deal with the Birmingham-based van-maker, which is controlled by GAZ and owned by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

Weststar has already started exporting the vans to Brunei and Thailand.

The group's managing director, Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim, said in a statement from London that a four-week bridging loan of £5 million (Bt261 million) was being provided by the British government to keep LDV afloat while Weststar completes the deal.

The Commerce Ministry will be holding a "Middle East 2009" event on Tuesday at Bangkok Convention Centre in Central Plaza Lat Phrao. The event is aimed at expanding exports to new markets, especially the Middle East, the Business Development Department's director-general Kanissorn Navanugraha said. Exporters participating in this event will learn about the intricacies of exporting goods to the Middle East, business risks and opportunities, he said. - The Nation
