
The office on Thursday revealed the result of the spending survey in Muang Khon Kaen that cover 100 respondents who buy products on installments.
Economist Danai Buranapiyawong said the monthly installments, including installments on houses, land, vehicles and motorcycles, account for one third of household debts. Most of the products bought on installments, 77 per cent, are electrical appliances like washing machine and refrigerators. 44 per cent bought entertainment products like TV sets and hometheatres. While only 19 per cent bought products for their careers, like computer.
44 per cent of them financed the purchases through cards of non-bank institutions like Aeon, EasyBuy and First Choice. 26 per cent opted for financial packages from the distributors.
Respondents with monthly income below Bt5,000 are buying necessary products like rice in installments, mostly through direct-selling agents. Meanwhile, those with higher income are buying entertainment items from shopping malls. The low-income expressed that the government should create installment programmes.
The survey found that one third of the buyers has defaulted on their loans.
