This evening, the Culture Ministry will stage a rare gala performance of a Khon classical mask dance from the Ramayana Epic at Victory Monument as part of the government-hosted celebration of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's coronation.
Among the full programme prepared by the Fine Arts Department for Coronation Day, the 100-strong Khon troupe will enact an episode in which Phra Ram travels across an ocean to fight the valiant Giant King Tossakan.
The spectacle would be held from 8.30pm until midnight, Karun Sutthipul, director of the department's Office of Performing Arts, said yesterday.
The grand event also features an exhibition at the Royal Plaza in honour of His Majesty's support for Thai heritage conservation as well as nine stages set up along the route from the King Rama V Equestrian Statue to Sanam Luang.
Traffic Police would also block off Rajdamnoen Nok, Klang and Nai roads, as well as Uthong Nai Road and those around the statue, from 4pm to midnight.
