Universal health programme wins Bt100 bn budget

Public Health Minister Wittaya Kaewparadai said that the government has approved a Bt100 billion budget in 2010 for the National Health Security Office (NHSO), which provides free medical treatment to 47 million people nationwide under the universal health care scheme.

The Cabinet also increased the per-capita budget from Bt2,200 to Bt2,400, though the NHSO wanted to increase the amount to Bt2,700 in 2010.

NHSO's deputy secretary general, Dr Prateep Tanakijchareon said this cut would affect the NHSO's plan to improve the quality of health care services especially the primary care unit's health service.

Bangkok Hospital and 17 hospitals in its nationwide network have agreed to provide treatment and medical emergency care for patients with heart disease, who are registered under the universal health care coverage.
