Webmaster could face fifty years in prison

Nine more charges have been brought against the webmaster of prachatai.com web board of breaking computer law by allowing users to post views deemed offensive to the monarchy.

If found guilty, Chiranuch Premchaiporn could face 50 years in prison as each charge carries a five-year maximum prison term. A first charge was brought on March 6.

The additional charges were brought on April 7, but Chiranuch kept them from the media's eyes until yesterday to allow time for her family to adjust emotionally.

She told The Nation that she thought it wrong to combine all the cases as the maximum sentence would exceed that for serious crimes such as rape and murder.

Chiranuch also insists that some of the comments deemed offensive were deleted on the day they were posted.

"Perhaps that wasn't quick enough," she said, adding that she had learnt from reliable sources that six more websites were to be charged with similar crimes in the immediate future.

Freedom Against Censorship Thailand, a free-speech advocacy group, issued a statement on Wednesday calling on the government to drop all charges against Chiranuch as violating the principle of freedom of expression.
