Last chance for security officials: PM

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday gave officials a last chance to make "obvious changes" in the way they handle law enforcement to prevent more breakdowns in civil order over the next few days.

"The government wants to prove that we have control over national security," he said.

"Otherwise, the government will find people who must take responsibility,'' he said.

In his weekly address to the nation on TV Channel 11 and Radio Thailand, Abhisit said he called a late-night meeting with top security officials that ran for several hours to find the flaws in security measures for the Pattaya Summit.

He said he had instructed officials to bring those involved in the raids to justice.

"We will take drastic legal action against those who broke the law within the legal framework,'' Abhisit said.

The protest has not been about a call for democracy as they claimed, he said. Instead, the protest leaders urged their followers to break the law, he said. If they were sincere about bringing about democracy, they could send representatives to negotiate with him, the premier added.
