Auto output to fall to 950,000 units

Automotive companies' capacity was cut by 40 per cent in the first two months, in line with the 25 per cent drop in exports and 30 per cent drop in domestic sales, according to the Thailand Automotive Institute.

Wallop Tiasiri, director of the institute, said this confirms that Thailand would manufacture fewer than 1 million vehicles this year, from 1.4 million last year.

While the vehicle production output could fall to 950,000 units this year, a number of 450,000 units will be for domestic market and 500,000 are for export.

Still, he believed that domestic sales in March and April would pick up after the Excise Department announced that it had no plan to cut excise taxes to boost the domestic market.
