NEPC approves new power plan

The National Energy Policy Council on Monday approved the revised power development plan (PDP), which is revised in line with the declining economic growth.

Under the plan, at the end of 2021, Thailand's total generating capacity would be 51,792 megawatts, down by 6,408MW from the original plan. During 2009-2021, installed capacity would be 30,155 MW, down from the original plan by 5,091 MW.

More power from small power producers would also be purchased. The power authorities would also reduce the demand for power from neighbouring countries, and focus more on local power producers.  It would delay the purchase of power from 2 power producers by a year. Meanwhile, the capacity of nuclear power plants, which would commence operations in 2020 and 2021, would be cut by half to 1,000 MW.
