Violence continues in Narathiwat as one killed

Narathiwat - Suspected militants shot dead a local rubber tapper and seriously injured his wife Monday morning in this southernmost province where insurgency violence continues unabated, police said.

Police said the victim died from wounds to his chest and back and his wife, who fled through the rubber plantation, suffered severe injuries and rescued by local residents.

More than 3,200 people have been killed since January 2004 in Thailand's deep South where authorities said a new generation of Muslim militants are trying to carve out a separate homeland for the Malays in the region.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb targeting a security unit patrolling the outback of Sukirin district Monday morning went off but fails to inflict any injuries.

Meanwhile, in nearby Pattani's Tambon Pakaharang, a local resident survived an attempt on his life when four gunmen riding pillion on two motorbikes, using 11mm and AK47, fired several shots at him as he was riding his motorbike.

Mahyuding Cheloh, 36, was rushed to a nearby hospital by local residents.
