Cash-strapped docs

Tak's Mae Sot Hospital was burdened with Bt50 million last year for medical treatment of destitute Burmese workers, its director said yesterday.

The figure the year before was Bt40 million, said Dr Kanoknart Pisutthakul, adding that the hospital's 39 doctors had to handle 1,200 Thai and Burmese patients a day, a "medical crisis".

An informed source said some 200 destitute Burmese a day went for treatment and about half were admitted as in-patients. The situation is aggravated as they lose their jobs due to the economic situation, the source said, depriving them of money or security to pay for treatment.
