PM accused of hiding his wealth by concealing a Honda

The opposition Pheu Thai Party yesterday said discrepancies were found in Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's asset-disclosure reports that might point to an intention to conceal wealth.

Karom Polthaklang, a member of the party's working group on legal affairs, said in Abhisit's asset report filed with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) after becoming an MP in January 2008, he stated that he owned two Honda cars: a CR-V and an Odyssey.

When Abhisit filed his asset report again after assuming the premiership last December, he listed the CR-V and a Mitsubishi Space Wagon but not the Odyssey, said Karom.

Speaking at NACC headquarters, Karom said he had requested in writing that the director-general of the Land Transport Department provide registration details of the vehicle in question, such as the name of the owner.

He said that his initial investigation found no records about the vehicle, which carried Bangkok licence-plate number 9 Lor Chor 2733.

He suspects Abhisit of purposely filling out his financial statement incompletely to conceal his wealth, Karom said, adding that he would bring the matter to the NACC's attention if he could uncover more evidence backing up his claim.
