We have to remember that democracy is a Western product imported into Thailand, so mapping this system on Thailand will not entirely fit since Thailand has a different history, culture and development. Naturally, during a transition, every country stumbles. So, maybe a slow but stable transition is better for Thailand. I disagree with the assertion that with the current political climate there is shrinking space for people who find their choices flawed. On the contrary, there is more room for the public to give input to help construct our society and the kind of democracy we want because, whether we like it or not, politics is a part of our lives and will affect us whether or not we play a role in it or try to shut it entirely out.

Democrats are right to look to the North and Northeast
I am a registered and die-hard Democrat. Even though I did not agree with the way the Democrat Party became the government, and will continue to question the party, as is the duty of a citizen, I must admit that they have regained some of my support.
The prime minister has made several right decisions and he seems sincere in his words and actions, like his mentor, Chuan Leekpai. He vows to improve and not to meddle with the media, and he refuses to have a bulletproof automobile knowing that there are real threats against him. Last, but not least, the mentor himself dared to go where no other high-ranking Democrat would: the Northeast. Even when pelted with rotten eggs and chased away, he still managed to smile and calmly speak to voters in the hostile environment. Campaigning and talking to Northern and Northeastern voters was one of several things I had suggested to the Democrat Party in the past. Now they are doing it and I hope they will survive and continue to do so. It shows that they have the will to do the right thing and they can stand the heat in the kitchen.

Standard phonetic spelling would be a big step forward
It has always amazed me that official Thai organisations don't join forces to create a Thai identity - which is very much sought after by the rest of the world. Create a panel of not only Thai people, but include foreign connoisseurs, who could help create standard names for the delicious Thai cuisine, among other things.
Whilst they are at it, also include the road signage around Thailand so foreign motorists have a chance of driving through this beautiful country recognising the roads. Have you seen how many different spellings there are for Sri Nakarin Road?

Don't forget that we must eat as well as drive cars
I am glad to see that the Commerce Ministry, in asking for funds to support farm goods, has not overlooked the link between promoting alternative energy as a means to increase prices for fuel crops. However, the ministry must keep in mind that increasing the prices of fuel crops can also affect the price and availability of these crops for human and animal consumption. In order for the support scheme to be effective, the ministry must look at it in terms of the big picture and seek the input of relevant ministries and agencies such as the Agriculture Ministry and Biotec. These agencies are currently using technology to increase agricultural yields.
