Thaksin speaks at fund-raiser

Ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra last night repeated his claim that he was a victim of political persecution and unfair treatment.

He made his phone-in address that was broadcast during a fund-raising outdoor dinner organised by politicians loyal to him near a temple in Bangkok's Don Muang district.

Some 20,000 red-clad supporters of Thaksin took part in the event.

Thaksin said that the court cases against him originated from an investigation by a group of people who were his enemies. He was referring to the Assets Examination Committee.

He compared the generals who overthrew his government to "security guards who want to run the company in the executives' place".

Thaksin also repeated his readiness to become prime minister and reiterated his call for his supporters to help bring him back to power. He also thanked the red shirts for their unwavering support to him.

The fund-raiser was organised at Wat Phai Khieo, with 1,000 Chinese banquet tables, each of which required a donation of Bt10,000.
