More new cars on the roads

The number of newly-registered vehicles across the nation reached 2.4 million units last year, up 106,166 from the previous year, according to the Land Transport Department.

Of total, 318,724 were passenger cars, up 21,405 units or 7.2 per cent from the previous year. The number of pick-up trucks dropped 22,204 units or 7.4 per cent to 274,449 units.

Land Transport Department Director-General Chairat Sanguansue said due to economic crisis, more consumers focus on small-sized vehicles which could be driven by alternative energy or motorcycles. Of all 5,000 newly-registered buses, half are fuelled by natural gas for vehicle (NGV).
