Noppawan beats Australian in first round



World Junior No 1 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn spent just 37 minutes on the court to vanquish Fernanda Faria of Brazil 6-0 6-0 in the girls' singles first round of the Australian Open yesterday.

The 17-year-old was one of the three Thais winning the opening round action. Kanyapat Narattana also ad?vanced with a 6-3 6-4 win over Anna Brazhnikova of Sweden while Nicha Lertpitaksinchai won her match on Sunday.

Noppawan, a finalist at Wimbledon last year, will play Dutch girl Quirine Lemoine in round two. Kanyapat has a tough assignment against reigning Wimbledon junior champion Luara Robson while Nicha takes on Victoria Kamens-kaya.

In the doubles, Noppawan and Beatrice Gumulyaof Indonesia, seeded second, beat Australia's Sophie Letcher and Olivia Rich 6-1 6-3. Luksika and Nicha ousted Faria and Hilda Melander of Sweden 6-1 6-0.

Meanwhile, an inauspicious wrist injury forced Zheng Jie concede her fourth-round match against Svetlana Kuznetsova.
