Two injured as container ships collide in heavy fog

Poor visibility caused by thick fog led to the collision of two container ships in the Chao Phraya River at the Wat Bangnanok pier in Bang Kor Laem district, early Saturday morning.

At least one container from one of the ships fell on cement-laden barges pulled by a tugboat and sank in the river, injuring two crew from a river barge.

Marine police temporarily closed the river to commuter traffic to allow the police to inspect the scene. The injured crewmen were slightly injured and sent to hospital.

According to the initial police investigation, thick morning fog obstructing visibility and waterborne traffic may have been the cause of the accident. The authorities are questioning those involved in the accident and also taking statements from witnesses.

Thick morning fog on Friday disrupted airplane landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport. However, air traffic operates normally Saturday despite morning fog.
