Thai envoy to Asean named

Thailand becomes the second Asean member state to appoint a permanent representative to the Jakarta-based secretariat.

Phiemsak Milinthachina is expected to present his credential to Asean Secretary General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan in April.

The Asean Charter, which took effect on Dec 15, 2008, obliges all 10 member states to appoint a permanent representative with the rank of ambassador to be based in the Asean hjeadquarters.

The representatives, who will constitute the Committee of Permanent Representatives, are tasked with supporting the work of the Asean Community Councils, coordinating with Asean National Secretariats and other Asean sectoral ministerial bodies, as well as liaising with the bloc's secretary-general and secretariat.

Phiemsak is currently served as Thailand's ambassador to Hungary and has worked extensively on international economic issues.
