The Education Ministry is going to tackle the shortage of teachers by hiring 13,000 administrative officers for state schools.

Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit yesterday pointed out that the lack of administrative officers had long forced teachers to handle administrative work, which made them less focused on teaching tasks.

"Hiring administrative officers will also reduce the unemployment rate in the country," Jurin said.

Deputy Education Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat said priority in recruitment would be given to applicants with registered home towns in areas where schools needed administrative help.

Successful applicants will receive a onemonth training course before beginning their jobs.

Teacherrelated issues have received attention this week because yesterday was National Teachers' Day.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday attended ceremonies relating to the day at the Teachers' Council of Thailand.

Many outstanding teachers received awards during the ceremonies.

Abhisit urged teachers to uphold ethics and fulfil their duties in all aspects.

"Aside from embracing professional ethics, teachers must also lead good examples for others to follow," Abhisit said, "I personally think highly of the teaching profession. It is a respectable occupation".

The premier emphasised that teachers played a vital role in developing the country's human resources.

Although the ceremonies inside the Teachers' Council of Thailand meeting hall went on smoothly, there were about 10 redshirted protesters rallying outside.

Speaking through loudspeakers, the protesters lambasted Abhisit. They also carried out a ritual to curse him.

However, teachers present nearby expressed their support for the premier. They shouted "Fight On, Fight On" in support of Abhisit.

In a related development, the Confederation of Teachers in the Three Southernmost Provinces called on Abhisit to boost teachers' safety in the deep South.

"During the past five years, the violence has killed 108 educational staff members," confederation chairman Boonsom Thongsiplai said.

Insurgents have carried out bloody attacks in the southernmost province almost on a daily basis.

"Please do something to boost teachers' morale. We want safety in our lives," Boonsom said.

He also asked about badges of honour and special allowances for teachers who work in risky areas.

"Please pay special attention to this issue. Make it a gift for National Teachers' Day," he added, "Please give a boost to our morale so that we can continue working here while waiting for peace to return".

Boonsom also suggested that the government should involve locals in beefing up security.

"It's best to have local communities on our side," he said.
