Chulalongkorn rules the pool

Chulalongkorn ruled the pool by scooping four out of the seventh gold on offer with Radomyos Madjua snatching his third gold in the 200m individual medley but the champ was completely surprised in 100m breast stroke event in the on-going 36th Thailand University Games at Ramkhamhaeng University.

Record-holder Radomyos retained his crown in the 200m individual medley event after touching the board first in two minutes, 08.34 seconds. However fatigue took its toll on him.

Radomyos, who is also a record-holder in the 100m breaststroke, was so exhausted that he could not bring out his best in the event.

Dhurakijpundit's Voravudh Amphaiwan, also a national swimmer, clocked the fastest time of one minute, 04.50 seconds to push the reigning champion, Radomyos, to second place, 0.40 seconds behind.

Swimming sensation Natthanan Junkrajang from the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce, who claimed nine gold medals at the recent National Games in Phitsanulok and four gold medals at the SEA Games last year, bagged her fifth gold after clocking 4.30.41 minutes in the women's 400m freestyle event.

Chulalongkorn dominated the swimming competition with four gold. The UTCC, Kasetsart and Dhurakijpundit shared one gold apiece.

Kasetsart also took the lion's share of four out of eight gold medals on offer in the bowling competition yesterday. Bangkok claimed two, with Siam and Ramkhamhaeng taking one gold each.

Hosts Ramkhamhaeng were lacklustre even though they made it to both the finals of the fencing event, where they went down to Bangkok in the men's sabre and to King Mongkut Institute Technology Ladkrabang in the women's foil events.

Four gold medals were up for grabs in the shooting competition yesterday which saw Bangkok's shooters take two gold. Chiang Mai and Siam bagged one gold apiece.

In the track and field competition, records fell in the women's hammer throw event as the top three finishers ended up breaking the existing mark. Gold medallist Rattana Suraprasert threw a record 44.93 metres.

At press time, Bangkok University surged ahead of the hosts Ramkhamhaeng in the medals standing with a haul of 17 gold. Ramkhamhaeng are in second place with 15 gold, while Kasetsart third with 13 gold.
