Senator faces being disqualified for falsifying asset statement

Senator Orapin Munsilp from Nakhon Sawan might be disqualified on the ground that she failed to declare debt liabilities worth about Bt187 million in her asset statement last year.

The National Counter Corruption Commission ruled on Thursday that Orapin's asset statement was fabricated to cover up debts.

In declaring her assets, Orapin has outlined her wealth amounting to Bt2.6 million. She said she had no outstanding liabilities.

After trying to verify the asset statement, the NCCC uncovered that the Bankruptcy Court ruled in March, 2008 to place Orapin into receivership for defaulting on loan repayment.

Based on the discovery of Orapin's debts, the NCCC will petition the Supreme Court to rule whether to remove her from office.

Under the Constitution and the anti-graft law, the conviction on falsifying asset statement is punishable by the removal from office and the five-year ban from holding political office. The offender will also be liable to face criminal proceedings for perjury.
