Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Pheu Thai MP as chairman of the committee, said the amendment would allow the government to punish the fund's board, which consists of permanent secretaries of ministries as well as 25 outsiders, as there is no law to punish the board for the fund's failure. He said it would also tackle any fraud, as it is unknown if the the fund recorded losses from investing in vested interests.
Representatives of the fund, which manages government pensions, yesterday informed the committee that due to the plunges in local and international stock markets, the fund last year lost Bt13.5 billion.
Surapong also said the board is entirely responsible for the loss, not the government.
Meanwhile, he added that the committee has set up a sub-committee, chaired by himself, to accumulate damage from the seizure of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airport. He said that the move would be a warning to protesters, that they should not make another attempt which could bring about huge damage to the country.
