Tamarine falls at the 1st hurdle

Tamarine Tanasugarn kicked off her 2009 season in a dismal style, losing to Czech Iveta Benesova 7-5 7-5 in the first round of the US$220,000 Moorilla Hobart International in Hobart yesterday.

The world No 35, who was seeded eighth, blew away a big 5-2 lead in the second set and collapsed in the next five games in her first match of the year. "My focus was not 100 per cent. I should have been more careful at 5-2. I need to concentrate more in my next match,'' said Tamarine whose next event is the Australia Open which starts on January 19.

However , Tamarine has a chance to avenge her loss as she and Alla Kudryavsteva of Kazakhstan will play Benesova and Barbora Strynova in the opening round of the doubles.
