Writer Michael Wright dies

Michael

Michael Wright, writer and expert of Thai history, died of lung cancer at Bangkok Hospital yesterday afternoon. He was 68.

Born in Southampton, southern England, Wright has made Thailand his permanent home on arriving in Bangkok in 1961. Educated at St Michael's College in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, Michael Wright received no formal training in Thai history and his knowledge of Thailand, its history, archaeology and culture was basically self-taught.

He learned the nuts and bolts of Thai history and culture through literary works by notable Thai authors like MR Kukrit Pramoj and Phraya Anuman Ratchadhon.

He came to public attention through his numerous articles on history and culture published in Thai-language magazines. Many of his essays and articles appeared from 1979 in "Silpa Wattanatham" (Arts and Culture) and "Matichon Sudsapda" after 2000. His linguistic skills landed a prestigious position of foreign affairs expert at the Bangkok Bank's Musical Art Department in 1970.
