New committee favours shutdown of Don Mueang

Newly appointed Air Transport Rehabilitation and Development Committee chairman Srisook Chandrangsu on Monday will propose to an air-transport workshop that Suvarnabhumi Airport serve as the sole commercial airport.

Speaking after his first meeting with his committee on Thursday, Srisook said the most pressing task in restoring tourist confidence was to shift domestic operations back to Suvarnabhumi. Don Mueang Airport could be used for charter flights and private jets, as well as a maintenance centre.

Don Mueang Airport was reopened in March 2008 for domestic flights, over a year after the opening of Suvarnabhumi. The authorities said the reopening would ease congestion at the new international airport.
